How Much Does A TriCaster Cost

This is a question I get asked quite regularly. For anyone who doesn’t know, Vmix is an external software which works in conjunction with your video editing program of choice to allow you to edit footage, add transitions and titles etc. As well as do the same for encoding purposes.

This post will break down what Vmix can do for you, what OBS can do for you and make a final decision.

What is Vmix?

Vmix is an external software which allows you to edit your footage in the program of your choice. It comes with premade transitions, titles, audio tracks etc. which will allow you to turn raw footage into something that looks good without excess editing, or having to find royalty free transitions and titles. It is fully compatible with all major editing software such as Final Cut Pro X , Adobe Premiere etc.

If you are thinking about getting Vmix, do it! You won’t be disappointed.

What is OBS?

OBS stands for Open Broadcasting Software and is a free software which allows you to stream or record footage. It comes with a whole range of tools and features for streaming and recording, including screen capture (videos of your screen), webcam and overlays (graphics etc.) as well as the ability to edit your footage before outputting it. You can also add other visual effects such as colour correction and image masking to your footage, something which Vmix does not allow you to do.

Why would you need both?

If you wish to add a graphic overlay onto the screen while streaming or recording this is normally easy enough with OBS however if you wanted that overlaid graphics in the background then you will have to use another software such as Photoshop or Gimp.

You can use both software’s to do the same tasks, however this is where Vmix really excels. The premade transitions and titles speed up the editing process dramatically and Vmix is compatible with many more software programs than OBS which means that if you are working on some project in your chosen program then all of a sudden you need to go live, the Vmix is the perfect solution.

What does it have that OBS doesn’t?

For starters, Vmix comes with pre-made transitions and titles which are extremely user friendly. These can be dragged onto your footage in no time at all allowing you to create professional looking videos in a fraction of the time.

It also has a powerful encoding engine which allows you to fine tune the settings on your stream or recording with ease, giving you more power and control over what goes out onto the internet.

The best feature of Vmix however is the fact that it is compatible with many different programs. While OBS can only work in conjunction with one software, the Vmix works with over ten different programs.

Summary!

So to answer the question of Vmix vs OBS, it’s clear that if you are looking for ease of use and compatibility then go with Vmix. If you want more fine tuned control over your video output then OBS is still a viable solution for this.

Either way both software’s will be a huge help in your video production and streaming endeavors.
